Farewell to a Pioneer: Ras Natty Baby, the Voice of Conscience
Joseph Nicolas Emilien · 1954 — 2026 · Co-founder of Natty Rebels · Son of Rodrigues · Voice of Conscience
♪ Most famous song: "Leve Do Mo Pep"
The Municipality of Beau Bassin-Rose Hill, in communion with the Nelson Mandela Centre for African Culture and the entire Mauritian nation, mourns the loss of Joseph Nicolas Emilien, known to all as Ras Natty Baby.
As the co-founder of the Natty Rebels movement, he was much more than a musician; he was a bearer of messages, a "messenger of the soul," who gave a voice to the resilience and dignity of our people. From his native island of Rodrigues to international stages, his unique fusion of Sega and Reggae — conscious Seggae/Reggae — left an indelible mark on the musical identity of the Indian Ocean.
While his son, Salem Emilien, carries on his work by crafting his own handmade traditional instruments, the nation will remember the spiritual strength of Ras Natty Baby. Today, he joins Kaya and the great ancestors in the pantheon of our heritage. His voice is not silenced; it will resonate forever at the Plaza on June 21st, and within every ravanne.
Our deepest sympathies go out to his family, his loved ones, and his countless fans.
