Biography

BerTz (Bertrand Philibert, born 1982) is a Mauritian artist, DJ, producer and Digital Media Specialist with a background in Audio Engineering. His work fuses deep electronic textures with the warmth of Creole rhythms, jazz and soul, crafting a unique blend that celebrates both roots and innovation.

More than a performer, BerTz is a storyteller — translating emotion, history and community into music that connects people across cultures. His sets and productions explore identity, unity and the power of shared experience, carrying the essence of island life into the global soundscape.

He attended the Conservatoire National de Musique François Mitterrand at the age of six (starting with guitar), began DJ'ing at 15 — mentored by DJ Kingdom — and worked at Radio One while still in school. He went on to complete a B.A. in Recording Arts (Middlesex University, London / SAE Byron Bay, Australia) in 2005, an MBA in Project Management (University of Southern Queensland) in 2010, and an M.A. in Creative Media Practice (SAE / Middlesex London) in 2016 — researching the post-colonial evolution of Mauritian music and the development of creative industries for the socio-economic integration of African-descendant communities.

Resident DJ at the C-Moog Sound Bunker in Byron Bay (2004–2005), he joined the Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation in 2005, then handled Audio-Visual Management for Club Med Resorts across Asia (Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, Maldives) and Mauritius between 2005–2008. He later joined the Open University of Mauritius and served as Creative Consultant for the Economic Development Board under the Ministry of Finance.

His credits include on-location recording for Ananda Devi's film "Les Enfants de Trou Marron" (winner of Best New Movie in Africa) and the award-winning 'Renobsession' campaign for Renault on Reunion Island (2008). Today, BerTz is shaping a creative ecosystem that blends artistry, innovation and community impact — from audio-visual production and immersive hospitality experiences to a digital distribution platform for talent from the Indian Ocean, Africa and Asia.

Latest releases — "Shadows" (a meditation on the hidden years and quiet rebirth) and "Roll It Right" (a tropical dance record celebrating island nightlife and Indian Ocean joy) — are streaming now on YouTube, Spotify and Bandcamp.
