Biography
Kaya (Joseph Reginald Topize, 1960–1999) was born in Roche Bois. Inspired by Bob Marley and rooted in Mauritian Creole tradition, he invented Seggae — a fusion of Sega and Reggae — with his band Racine Tatane.
His album 'Seggae Experience' and songs like 'Simé la vie' and 'Zistwar Revoltan' turned him into the voice of a generation. His death in police custody in February 1999 remains a defining moment in modern Mauritian history.
Kaya's legacy is honoured every year through concerts, murals and the enduring influence of Seggae on artists from Ras Natty Baby to today's youngest producers.
